Book review: White Girl in Yoga Pants

“You’re stronger than you think you are.” This is Melissa Scott’s mantra. She doesn’t just say it, however, she lives it and shares it in her teaching and her daily life.   Melissa’s first book, White Girl in Yoga Pants: Stories of Yoga, Feminism & Inner Strength, was published in September and is available on Amazon in print and on Kindle.

Through a series of essays Melissa shares her wisdom, her struggles, her triumphs, and her joy for life. Melissa guides the reader through her journey step by step.

She traces her vulnerabilities around eating disorders, sexual abuse, and difficult relationships. These are difficult topics and you may think you don’t really want to read about them. She shows real life, though, and how she overcame what could have made her stop. Melissa shares how her challenges helped her discover inner strength, find a practice through yoga that made her strong physically, emotionally, and spiritually, and has led her to the path she now on as a yoga teacher, author, entrepreneur, and counselor.

The book is divided into three sections: Yoga, Social Issues, and Life. Essays that may trigger individuals who have had similar experiences are marked at the beginning. This is an unusual and appreciated warning demonstrating the care that Melissa has for all of her readers. She is not afraid to address controversial topics that range from how yogis present themselves in social media, to body image, to the current political situation.   Melissa’s writing is clear and has a sense of purpose. She may make you feel uncomfortable but she will also make you laugh. Maybe she will lead you to do something different or observe life in a different way. Pick up a copy here.   Dip in, read it straight through, talk to someone else about what she shares in her book. Share the book with others in your tribe who may be struggling with similar issues.
